Movie Night Update

Our annual movie night is Friday the 13th of August at the Captain's Quarters. We'll be gathering in the back yard to watch - guess what? - Star Trek!! This year we'll be enjoying a Jersey Mike's sandwich buffet (thanks to Emma for the great deal), desserts and chips. The cost is still $12, which covers your dinner and entertainment. Bring a chair and a beverage and you're good to go.

Please plan to let us know you're coming, and pay your $12, by the end of the month. You can pay in person at the picnic on Sunday or online via Venmo or PayPal next week. We hope to see you all there under the stars!

CONvergence Blood Drive Update

Unfortunately, we won't be able to host our annual blood drive at CONvergence this year. The arrangements won't allow the parking of the blood mobile at the hotel. We'll be meeting with the convention committee after this year's event to make early plans for next year. We hope you all have fun at the convention and hope to run in to you there!

We can still have our customary life-saving impact, however. We're considering alternative locations and will let you know ASAP what we come up with, but please don't wait - if you can donate blood please go to redcrossblood.org to make your appointment now. It's more important that you donate during this extreme blood shortage than waiting for our club's specific blood drive! Insider tip: Donate between July 7 and 31 for a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email! PLUS, a chance to win gas for a year, a $5,000 value!

2021 Chuckwagon Tickets Available!

We are planning on our yearly Chuckwagon fundraiser on October 17th from 2 to 4:30pm. We'll have all of the usual fun, including a great chili dinner, silent auction, prizes, and a 50-50 raffle. The location will again be the Dan Patch American Legion in Savage.

We're pleased to be able to keep the cost the same as past years at $12. There will be a cash bar. We hope that you can find friends and family to attend with you, as this is our largest fundraiser of the year and we hope to fill the house. You can pick up your tickets this Sunday at the anniversary picnic.

We'll also be donating proceeds from the 50-50 raffle to charity, and our choice this year is St Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The odds of winning depend on the number of tickets sold, but they are really good! You can pick up these tickets at the picnic, too. We'd love to see everybody take at least a few - and find others to play - so we can donate as much as possible.

Finally, please be thinking about items to donate to the auction. We have had some excellent donations over the years and hope to do it again. New items only, please!

Greetings, Crew!

It's the last day of the last month of all-virtual USS Nokomis events!! Woo hoo! We are so excited to see your faces at the meeting on July 11th, and even more excited about all the other fun things to come.

Here's hoping that everyone finds some time to relax and smile over the coming 4th of July weekend. We'll be heading out to the cabin for some boating and sunning and eating. No matter what you do, we hope you have a nice time doing it.

Take care and see you around the Galaxy!

Master Class with LeVar Burton

Several generations have grown up with LeVar Burton as a role model. Of course, those of us reading this newsletter know him as Geordi. He is also famous for his starring role in Roots, and millions of children learned from him over 21 seasons of the Emmy and Peabody award-winning series Reading Rainbow. Clearly, he's an amazing story teller.

But you don't have to take my word for it (see what I did there, Reading Rainbow fans?)! He now has his own Master Class - LeVar Burton Teaches the Power of Storytelling - available HERE. According to the site, "LeVar Burton, the star of Roots and Emmy-winning host of Reading Rainbow, invites you to discover the power of storytelling. He shares how storytelling is an integral part of humanity and why it’s a critical tool of connectivity." Through a 13-session lesson plan and 5.5 hours of learning, he pledges to help you identify your personal story and learn how to communicate that story to the world. Pretty cool - check it out!

The Most Toys?

Did you play with, or build, Star Trek ships and props as a kid? How 'bout now? Well, here's your chance to own the "biggest and most deluxe" Playmobil set ever made!

The USS Enterprise NCC 1701 Playset is available for preorder HERE and will be available in September. The price is $499.99 and includes shipping. When complete the starship will measure 42-inches long and 18-inches wide. Features will include electronic lights and sounds that can be controlled via an app, and you can open up the saucer section of the Enterprise to see a full 1966-style bridge. The body of the ship will also open to display the engineering room.

Greetings, Crew!

Rain! We got RAIN! Now maybe we'll get some more and my grass will stop being crispy. We can only hope. It would be nice to have some green left on movie night - August 13th - to share with all of you. Did you get that - save the date for August 13th for backyard Star Trek fun. Can't say it often enough!

I also can't remind you enough about the Feed My Starving Children packing night on July 19th. We have only four people signed up for our 10 slots, so please go on to this website and sign up using the group name USS Nokomis. We'd love to see you!

See you around the galaxy!
