Captain’s Log, Supplemental: May 3, 2023

Greetings, Crew!

Lots of fun coming in May and June, so mark your calendars. There's a TC Trek Trivia night next Wednesday, the 10th, followed by our General Membership Meeting on the 13th. We'll go on our annual Journey to Babble on the 20th. June 10th is our 39th Anniversary Picnic at West Bush Lake Park (with membership meeting), and just 5 days later is the premier of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Season 2. We're also working on some other fun activities in June. We hope to see you!

I'm off to enjoy the nice weather. See you around the Galaxy!

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: April 26, 2023

Greetings, Crew!

Well, did you watch it? If not, hurry up so we can talk about it without worrying about spoilers! I know that I got all the feels. Speaking of feels, if you haven't been watching The Ready Room along with Picard, you're missing out. Wil Wheaton does an amazing job of channeling all of our inner geeks and going behind the scenes. This is true of all current Trek, of course, and will continue when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fires up on June 15th.

Here's something to think about, and we'll be discussing it at our next few meetings to make a plan. We are 40 years old next year and we deserve a party! We've done some fun things in the past, most recently our Mississippi River cruise for the 30th and our big bash for the 35th. We've thrown two great parties for the Twin Cities Trek community in recent years, and we are masters of putting together fun events. Bottom line: please think about how YOU would like to celebrate the big event next year. We'll be deciding on an approach soon.

This is urgent: if you are willing to help with set-up, take-down and room duties at CONvergence from July 6th to the 9th, let me know ASAP. At present, we do not have enough hands to host a party room. The decision is due this week.

See you around the Galaxy!

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: April 19, 2023

Greetings, Crew,

We had a great time on Saturday with our multiple activities. Many thanks to our hosts for a great place to visit and work. During the business meeting we identified a few new events/dates for our upcoming calendar. We're looking forward to the Journey to Babble on May 20th, the Anniversary Picnic on June 10th, and hoping for a Como Zoo visit and a comedy club outing sometime in June. We've got the CONvergence Blood Drive on July 7th and we'll have a party room if there are enough hands to do the work. Side note: let me know if you have hands to do some of the work. Later in the summer, we are hoping to go to Allianz Field to see the Loons play. There's also a date for the 2023 Garden Party: August 12th. Lots of stuff going on, that's for sure.

After the meeting we saw some fine work from our members at the CAT Show. This year's displays included miniature architecture, quilting, floral displays, photography and cake decorating. The potluck meal also featured the skills of our members, and it was all yummmm.

Finally, we supported My Very Own Bed by making four blankets. The hours of effort were surely worth it, as they turned out beautifully. It's fun to imagine a child receiving the gift of their very own bed (which will also include sheets, pillow, bed and other cozy items) while in transition to a safe place to sleep.

Our thoughts are with Melanie, whose father passed recently. Our sympathies go to Melanie, Cory, and the whole family. The funeral will be on Saturday, and we have chosen to honor Russ with a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. We will make a donation from the club, and you are welcome to contribute. As always, you can use PayPal (send to ) or Venmo (@USS-Nokomis). You can also send a check if needed.

And in case you missed yesterday's big news.....wait for it.....we're going to get a Section 31 story after all, and it's going to be a feature film instead of a TV series! According to the official logline “Emperor Philippa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” Production on the film begins later this year. Sounds intriguing, yes?

That's it for now. See you around the Galaxy!

Captain’s Log: April 2023

Greetings, Crew!

Wow, what a change! Last week I was looking at a snowy landscape while writing my log, and today it's going to be over 80 degrees. Still some snow, but how long can it last (knock on wood)?

This week our meeting is going to be unusual and fun. First, it will not be at a library, but at a private home. Many thanks in advance to Lynne and Phill for having us! Second, everyone will have a chance to share their crafts, arts, and talents after the business meeting during the annual CAT Show. Then we'll enjoy a potluck meal made by everyone (so bring along something to share). Finally, we'll tie some fleece blankets to donate to My Very Own Bed, a Minneapolis organization that provides beds, bedding and Dream Kits to children who are transitioning to safe spaces. More information about the day is in the meeting announcement below.

Are you looking for something fun to do tonight? Let me know if you would like to join our team at TC Trek Trivia at 7pm at the Driftwood Char Bar. We can always use some more friends to play.

Take care everyone, and see you around the Galaxy!

Mary

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: First Contact Day 2023

Greetings, Crew!

Happy First Contact Day! Forty years from today, Zefram Cochrane will make the first warp flight from Bozeman, MT. We know that this will lead to First Contact with the Vulcans, and the rest will be history!

How will you celebrate? You could carve up a First Contact Day Salmon, like Commander Ransom from Star Trek: Lower Decks. You could also emulate Neelix and serve Zefram's favorite food - cheese pierogis. Certainly, a drop of the True could enhance your meal, unless you were spared the dubious effects of alcohol. No matter what you choose to enjoy, do remember to complete your day by enjoying Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride” during your takeoff. If you play Star Trek Online, you can also join your friends to build and launch your own Phoenix. What a day!!

Just one week left to prepare your Crafts, Arts, and Talents for our CAT Show after the April meeting. Plus, it's a potluck. Maybe some leftover salmon and pierogis? Totally kidding, but I'm sure your culinary talents - or talent for buying yummy alternatives - will shine!

Have a great week, and see you around the Galaxy!

Mary

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: March 29, 2023

Greetings, Crew!

Can I be more excited? Nope, I can not due to yesterday's big announcement. Season Two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming on June 15th! Sounds like a watch party in the making, yes? They also announced that the next season of Star Trek: Lower Decks will follow later in the summer. I guess I know what I'll be doing on Thursdays for a while!

Here's a tasty tidbit if you don't yet have plans for lunch and dinner today (or even if you do). Jersey Mike's is donating 100% of its proceeds from the day to charity. In Minnesota, this means Make A Wish. So shuttle on over or get delivery, but either way it's a win-win!

Finally, do you have your CAT Show item(s) chosen for April 15th? You can't bring an actual feline, but your Craft, Art, and/or Talent is most welcome! I'm probably going to bring pictures of my creations this year because they are messy, but last year we had some amazing creations on-site for the show. Virtual participants may have an advantage here if they created a full-size shuttlecraft or gormagander, but most things are easily transported to the meeting. And if your talent is singing or dancing or reciting poetry, you don't need anything but you! Don't be shy - we really want to see what you've been up to.

See you around the Galaxy!

Captain’s Log: March 22, 2023

Greetings, Crew!

We had a blast at the 2023 St Patrick's Day party and beer tasting last weekend. Lots of great food kept us happy while we visited and sampled the beverages. This year's 17 submissions ranged from dark to light, alcoholic to non-alcoholic, and liquid to semi-solid. What!!??? Read on..

The most unusual entries (by taste) were Roxanne's Moscow Mule Jelly Beans and Mary's Hormel Chili Cheese Brew. We had Hairless Dog, the non-alcoholic beer from Lynne and Phill, and Stubborn Soda Classic Root Beer from Emma and Ben. Scott's brew came from Finland, Nick's from Germany, and Rich's from Hawaii. There remained a mix of beers ranging from innovative to Coors Light!

The winner of the Bad Beer Board was Roxanne with those unique(!) jelly beans.

Second place went to Leah for Fantasy Factory Stout. Yeah, that's the one with the gun-totin' ninja cat riding a fire-breathing unicorn on the label. That's Leah's second year winning second place, which is pretty good considering she is too young to drink and therefore makes her selections by label quality alone. First place this year was - drum roll please - Stubborn Soda Classic Root Beer! That's the second time in recent years that a non-alcoholic soda took the top honor.

Thanks to everyone for playing. Congratulations to the winners, and I hope you all can use this information to choose your poison for next year!

See you around the Galaxy!

Mary

Greetings, Crew!

Yah, so when is the Lion going to become a Lamb? I still see several feet of snow on the ground!??? Just think, nine weeks from now we'll be doing a brewery tour in nice, balmy weather. Sounds like an alternate universe right now!

I hope you can be with us at the Edina Library on Saturday for our membership meeting. If not, join us by Zoom (information below) to catch up on our goings-in for the upcoming months. Keep in mind that we have two months in a row of 3rd-Saturday meetings, as Easter falls on our usual meeting weekend this year.

Don't forget the St. Patrick's Day/Beer Tasting party on Saturday. We'll give last minute details at the meeting and I've posted the information in the newsletter in recent weeks.

Here's to a balmy day in the 40s! See you around the Galaxy!
