Looking for the Journey to Babble? It’s a week later.

Well, it's the weekend of the 6th of May, and you're expecting the Journey to Babble Tour.  You might have also figured that we've moved it to one week later, after the meeting on the 13th.

This is the third year of the Journey to Babble Tour.  The third installment is just a little different than the first two.  First, we’re having after the General Membership meeting, so we’re reducing it from four stops to three.   Second, Babble isn’t just for beer any more.

We’re starting with a food and brew at a brewpub, next cocktails at a local distillery, and then creative drinks and fun at an artist-drive venue with more than just food and drink.    Enjoy!

The monthly meeting is at the Mounds View Public Library, where we'll start out at around 2:00PM if all goes well.

CHUCKWAGON 2017 was the most successful yet!!

CHUCKWAGON 2017 was the most successful yet!!

We sold 111 tickets this year!!  The menu was three types of chili with all the fixings you could possibly imagine.  The American Legion cooked the main chili and we received lots of compliments on how wonderful all the chili’s tasted.  The auction was outstanding with wonderful items to pick from.

We made a change from the VFW in St Paul to the American Legion in Savage.  The room was fantastic, open and larger than previously used.  The staff at the American Legion were absolutely superior – they were so helpful with anything we needed.  We are so, so excited to announce that after expenses we made $2,419.41.  The largest income from this event ever made!!  Of that amount we will be donating $245.00 to the Veteran’s Palliative Care Unit in loving memory of our dear Lucia Johnson.

Please note the 2017 Chuckwagon was our seventh year for this fundraiser.  In the seven years we have made $12,599.64 in profits!  THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND CONTINUED EFFORTS!!

Star Trek: Discovery – News and Watching Info

The new incarnation of our favorite franchise and life-consuming habit, Star Trek: Discovery is still forming.   The series première date isn't set, and each month we hear of a few cast members added as the production gets rolling.   The cast is already spending time together, as this Instagram photo points out - by the way, have we EVER looked that way, you know, eating and celebrating?

From left to right are Jason Isaacs (Discovery’s captain, Lorca), Michelle Yeoh (Captain Georgiou, whose ship is the Shenzhou), Chris Obi (the Klingon T’Kuvma, who is determined to bring together the various Klingon houses), Sonequa Martin-Green (Rainsford, also known as Number One, a lieutenant commander who serves as Discovery’s first officer and the show's main character); Kenric Green (not actually on the show, but definitely serving as Sonequa’s husband), Doug Jones (an alien science officer aboard Discovery), James Frain (the Vulcan father of Mr. Spock, Sarek), and Shazad Latif(Kol, a commanding officer of the Klingons).

Other cast members of the show not featured in this image are Terry Serpico as Starfleet Admiral Anderson, Maulik Pancholy as the Shenzhou’s chief medical officer, Nambue; Sam Vartholomeos as junior officer Connor, assigned to the Shenzhou; Mary Chieffo as L’Rell, a Klingon battle deck commander; Mary Wiseman as Starfleet cadet Tilly, who is assigned the Discovery, and Anthony Rapp as science officer Stamets.

So, when do we eat, celebrate, and watch the new show?  Right now it looks like sometime in late summer or early fall.  We've already put forth one idea: the same theater (living room) we used for November's movie night - but it's always fun to find new places.

To keep us hooked, here's a teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9QHrNdgX4U.

Twenty-five folks got their signups and payment in before the October 22nd deadline passed.   The money goes  completely for the wonderful snacks for the night.  Mary and Dawn needed both the count and the payment early enough to buy food and prepare it for the event - it's all hand-made.

ZooBoo 2016 Is In the History Books

The 29th Edition of Como Friends' ZooBoo is in the history books, and it was a good one.  Over four nights just over 16,000 guests passed through the gates to help Como Zoo grow while helping themselves to some goodies.

Thiszooboo-path was the Nokomis' 23rd year helping out. The first station, Halloween, is our first stop each year and a great way to spend an evening with a few thousand new, close personal friends.  Thanks to everyone who could make it.  Special thanks to Art Johnson, our one and only perfect four-night volunteer character.

Next  year will be the 30th ZooBoo and if all goes as expected, will be a big party to celebrate.  Funds from that event will help to kick off work on the new Pinniped Plaza, replacing the Seal Island and Sparky Stage area with new performance and year-round display spaces.pinniped-plaza

Come join us next October for ZooBoo 30, and thanks again for all you did to help out in 2016.

    ZooBoo Time!

Como Zoo's Zoo Boo is FINALLY HERE!

    Celebrate Halloween without the Fright

All proceeds support the plants and animals of the Como Zoo and Conservatory.  The Nokomis has been helping out with this event since 1994 (this is our 23rd year).  We really want to help keep one of America's last free-admission zoos free.

Como Zoo will be transformed for Zoo Boo October 22nd, 23rd; and October 29th, 30th. Gates Open: 4:30-7:30 p.m. We're just four nights this year, so let's make them count.

    Volunteering

Como Friends are starting to gear up for our annual Como Friends ZooBoo at Como Zoo event and hope that you can join us again!  You can register to volunteer at the link below so the Zoo knows you're coming.  Drop Phill a line as well so we can let you know about last minute changes.

    Prep

On the morning of the first event night, Saturday October 15th, we'll be in full-on work to complete setups before the event.  We start at 9AM and hopefully we'll be done before the gates open.

    Event

Our folks will be heading up the new Halloween station, just inside the front gate.  We need to get there early (3PM), but we get done first.    Be sure to sign in up on the second floor of the Big Zoo Building - there are goodies for you there, and perhaps a surprise coupon.

    Dinner

Be sure to check with our folks at the first station, we'll get details there about the night's repast!  Hope to see you all there, all the time!
