Looking Ahead to Summer

The least snow-likely season in Minnesota is coming quickly, with Memorial Day Weekend's kickoff just 21 days from today.

  • Typically we have the June General Membership Meeting and Picnic, then skip July and August meetings and re-gather in September
    • If you have Club business, please try to get it completed by the June meeting if the whole organization is involved.
    • The Board will meet each month regardless of the General Membership meeting schedule - it's generally a brief check-in unless something comes up.  Dates will be on the Calendar
    • There will be a newsletter each month, sent on the regular schedule. We'll announce changes there.
  • Events continue over the summer,  We'll do our best to tee these up in June. These are all still works in progress:
    • CONvergence and the Blood Drive July 2 through 5
    • MN Loons Soccer on August 19
    • Strange New Worlds new season kicks off
    • Feed My Starving Children Community Service, penciled in for July 21

Starfleet Academy Watch Party, at Lynne and Phill’s

Starfleet Academy makes an even dozen versions of Star Trek.  We always think these premieres are a good occasion to get together, and this one is no different.  We're making a couple of simplifications this time. First, we're viewing on Friday evening January 16th to avoid the work-night choices.  Second, we're meeting at Phill and Lynne's home to skip the conflicts with football and other sport this time of year.  I know, a lot of folks will have watched it at the night before premiere, but who is going to watch it just once anyway? Phill will set up the big screen, and we'll watch BOTH episodes that night.

Lynne and Phill will take care of getting the pizzas, that's why we need to know if you're coming by the 14th. We'll have a mix of Papa Murphy's, some Heggie's as extra and make them as needed (Sorry, it's January - no pizza oven this time).  If you plan on coming, please sign up on USS Nokomis site, at the January meeting, or let Phill or Lynne know by Wednesday, January 14, so we can plan quantities. You can call or email us, or just use the sign-up sheet directly.  We'll supply the plates, napkins, and utensils as well.  If you feel joyful, we'd accept a $5 contribution to help out with costs.

Basic drinks (lemonade, iced tea) available. You're welcome and encouraged to bring your favorite preferred beverage, and we'll supply the cups and ice for you.

  • Feel free to arrive at our home anytime 6:00 p.m. or after on Friday, January 16.
  • We will watch the PREMIERE show at 7:00 p.m, and take a break before launching right into the second episode.

Now, it is January and weather is changeable.  Use your best judgement rather than calling for 'status'.  Lynne and I will be present no matter what, and we'll welcome folks that make it but Star Trek isn't worth risking life, limb, and health (and car).

We look forward to seeing you!

CPCK (Canadian Pacific) Holiday Train 2025

The 2025 CPKC Holiday Train will tour Canada and the U.S. Nov. 19 through Dec. 21, raising money, food and awareness to support food banks across our network. Professional musicians play free concerts from the brightly decorated train's stage. CPKC donates to the local food bank at each stop and encourages all attendees to make a monetary or heart-healthy food donation.

Locally, we usually like to see it at Union Depot, but we're all busy that night at Jax Cafe. If you're not joining us at Jax that night, I'd recommend the Union Depot location.  For the folks like me that want to do it all,  I'm gonna do some old-fashioned train chasing.  On Sunday, we'll check out the last location,  It's early enough (and maybe warm enough), but still dark and magical.  We'll meet at the  Stinson / Minneapolis location later on a school night.

I'll see you at there- let me know you'll be there and I'll keep an eye out for ya!

Day Event Time City/Town Address
Dec 14 20:15 - 20:45  (That's 8PM) Minneapolis, Minnesota 37 Avenue & Stinson Boulevard,   Minneapolis, Minnesota

Merry Christmas!

Garden Party 2025 – Are you Interested?

This year's Garden Party dinner will be on August 23rd at the Ben and Emma's home. This adults-only event is a fun time to relax and be waited on with your friends. You can even wear a lovely summer bonnet if you like!

Your $35 evening includes appetizers and a cocktail, followed by several courses of YUM. In past years we were outside when weather permitted, and others moved inside to the dry and cool. You can never tell what Vaal will have up his, well, loincloth since there is a shortage of sleeves on Gamma Trianguli VI.

There were signup sheets in years past, but not this year.  The date moved a few times and now that the date is so close, we're being a bit more direct.  If you're interested (and available) on Saturday, August 23rd starting at 6:30 PM, please contact Mary directly.

June Membership Meeting and 41st Anniversary Picnic

Greetings, Fellow Nokomisites!!!

We're hosting our 41st Anniversary Picnic IN PERSON.   We're moving north, to the home of Lynne Tauer and Phill Goldman in Dayton.

Date:  June 14th, 2025
Time:  Noon meeting; you're welcome to arrive any time after 11:00 AM
Wise Acres – Phill and Lynne’s
12021 Stoneridge Rd
Dayton
MN

"We bring the HEAT you bring the MEAT" - we'll have grills hot and ready to go and just a few tools.  Bring favorites if you have 'em.  We'll have a propane grill and a small charcoal kettle at the ready, and if you're in the mood we can light a fire in the fire pit and you can use your Dutch Oven.  Feel free to experiment, we're all friends here.

Phill has a 12" Pizza Oven on hand and he'll have a dozen 12" crusts available.  A few other folks are bringing sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, and onions.  If you want to try something unique (chicken tikka, sauerkraut and bratwurst) bring it along.   The pizzas are Neapolitan-style like Punch, cooking takes less than 2 min per pie.

We'll have a sharing table, bring whatever you feel makes a real picnic.  The Nokomis will supply plates, napkins, 'red cups' and a few utensils.  If your share dish has special tools required, please bring 'em.

Bring the beverage of choice with you as well.  We'll have some lemonade and iced tea ready.   We have a few outdoor, comfortable chairs on hand.  If you have a favorite outdoor seat you should bring it along.  We can backfill with some of those folding steel chairs.

What to look forward to:

  • A very short business meeting
  • Actual People in 3-D
  • The smells of good grilling and Pizza
  • And a few games, perhaps involving PEEPS

We'll also be setting up a virtual camera and speaker so you can visit if you just can't make it to Dayton.

Your Reminders List

  • Bring your main meal(s) - lunch and dinner and your beverage of choice
  • Something to share
  • Experimental Pizza Toppings if you dare
  • Comfy Outdoor Chairs
  • Outdoor recreation

The garage is ready and we have several shelter tents, so the event happens rain or shine.

We don't have an end-time planned, but please let us know if you're camping out.

Our 40th Anniversary Year – 1984-2024

The U.S.S. Nokomis was founded in June of 1984. We've had hundreds of meetings and events, dozens of celebrations, and uncountable hours of good times. A few hundred people have visited our Club and more than a few have remained long term. We've had romances and a few marriages, births and deaths, challenges and accomplishments. It's remarkable that any organization can last this long, it's time to celebrate.

It's a year-long celebration with a list of happenings:

  • On May 4th we held our Celebration Dinner and Dance.  For a meeting summary
    • Read the post 40th Anniversary Celebration was Fun!
    • Mary had some Challenge Coins made for our occasion - if you didn't make the Dinner and Dance, check with Mary to see if there's one available for you!
  • At the actual anniversary date we'll hold the Anniversary Picnic - June Meeting and 40th Anniversary Picnic NEXT MONTH
  • In the meantime, and before the Picnic you can get your swag - Scott's set up ussnokomis.square.site with mugs, t-shirts, and more - directly sent to your home, no need to wait for a meeting.

After Meeting Activities – Name That Story

Get your Trivia Mind ready, it's Name That Story, after the February Meeting!!

This will be a little bit new and a little experimental.  It will very definitely be Star Trek related, and having a ready stock of trivia in your head may or may not help since I like to level the playing field just a bit. If you remember overall stories, that's all you'll need (no ship IDs, stardates, minor characters, or backstage stuff - Sorry Jim).  For practice, try this one:  Intense twin rivalry winds up as a fistfight in the corridor.

We'll have a couple of rounds, and self-score between.  The prize is bragging rights, and the privilege of planning the next online game.

Seriously, whether you Win this one or not: If you have an idea for an after-meeting game, I'm happy to help you make it real, and it's always welcome even if we have other things later in the day.  Give it a shot, I can tell you folks in the group enjoy the work and are really forgiving of glitches.
