The when-and-where of things on the Nokomis’ member calendar

General Membership Meeting and Campout at Evers

This year’s anniversary picnic (and camp out) will be held at Loren and Carol Evers’ property. We own approximately 11 acres about 10 miles north of Stillwater (about 10 miles northeast of the old Madline farm). So there is plenty of room for all the fun-filled activities people would like to participate in.

For those that would like to camp out, you can show up any time after 5PM on Friday. If you come any earlier than that, chances are we won’t be home. There is plenty of open space for tents and/or camper’s so bring which ever you would like to sleep in. For those people that bring campers and would like power, please let us know in advance so we can plan for that need. If you do come on Friday please bring something to grill and something to share. Please pray for NO rain, otherwise we’ll all be living in the garage.

If you want to stay the night with the Evers, they are renting their very comfortable upstairs room for $50.  If you are interested in this fundraiser and warm bed, contact Carol and Loren directly.

The anniversary picnic will again be a potluck. So please bring something to grill and something to share. It will also be a BYOB event. We don’t have an extra refrigerator, but we’ll have cooler(s) available with plenty of ice. If anyone has a large cooler they can loan to the cause, please bring that along as well. We’ll be providing plates, napkins, cups, and utensils (of the paper and plastic variety).

Juana's family has gifted us with her Star Trek collection and costumes.  There will be a silent auction during the meeting, see the accompanying article.

Also, feel free to bring along your toys as long as you don’t mind them getting lost in the weeds or the lake.

MarsCon Blood Drive

It's time again for us to host a blood drive! This will be the 27th blood drive sponsored by the USS Nokomis, and the 11th at MarsCon. That's a lot of lives saved!

The drive will run from 10:30 to 4:30 on Saturday, March 5th at the Airport Hilton. You don't have to be a MarsCon attendee to donate blood, so even if your weekend is filled with other activities, stop by and give! Your crewmates will be in the main lobby checking in the donors and sending them out to the bus. Make your appointment on www.redcrossblood.org or let First Officer Jane know when you'd like to come.

Dinner and Lyric Arts Theater This Saturday

On This Saturday, January 16th we are going out for a nice evening of dinner and a play. The play is The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee, a Tony Award winning play that is supposed to be a hoot. Guests under the age of 14 are not allowed, so no little kids (isn't that intriguing?)! You may go online at www.lyricarts.org for more information. Tickets may be purchased by phone at 763-422-1838, and you'll want to reserve early in case they sell out the evening performance. Specify that you're with the USS Nokomis so they'll seat you by the group.

Dinner will be at Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano in The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes. Our reservation is for 3:30 pm. Check it out at www.biaggis.com.

If we're done dinner and still have time to kill, Phill and Lynne have invited us to their home for a warm place to stay.  Contact Phill for directions if you don't already know where they are.  Expect that the after dinner crowd won't arrive there until 5:30 or so.

The show starts at 7:30 PM in the Anoka Downtown area.

Beer, Beer, Beer

It's never too early to find a beer to enter in the beer tasting competition on March 19th. Jack and I will be having our 13th beer tasting and completion on March 19th, 2016. From home to barn to hotel to other hotel, the event has traveled around over the years. This time it will be at the Residence Inn Marriott in Roseville, where it's been for the last few years. Check it out at https://www.marriott.com/hotels/maps/travel/mspro-residence-inn-minneapolis-st-paul-roseville/ . As of this writing there are quite a few rooms available at the hotel, but remember that this is St Patrick's Day weekend and they tend to go fast! Staying in the hotel is not a must, of course, but it's handy.

Back to the beer - to enter the tasting you should bring 4-6 bottles of your entry. All types of beer, hard cider, malt beverage, near beer, maltini, non-alcoholic beer or malternative are welcome. You can even enter a soda if you'd like to, as you never know what will win. We are competing in a blind taste test for fabulous prizes, and sometimes the cheapest, most unlikely beer has won. There is also the USS Nokomis Bad Beer Board, which has sometimes gone to the most well-known and expensive beer. You never know!

What goes with beer? Food goes with beer. Bring something to share with the group, from a main dish to side dish to dessert. Another thing that goes well with beer is hot-tubbing, and happily there is a tub in the hotel. Feel free to bring your suits and towels and to change in the two bathrooms in our suite. Some games and good conversation will round out the evening.

The Nokomis is hosting this year’s All-Ships’/Alliances’ Holiday Party Bash. Join Us For Dancing, Music, Food, Friends and Fun for All!

Our Party runs from 5-9P, with our Pot Luck Dinner beginning at 5. We are having a LIVE DJ and Dancing from 6-9P.

National Lutheran Choir All Saints’ Concerts

Nokomis Friends,

Some of you may be familiar with this, to some it may be new. It also may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But, I do want to share this with those for whom it may be meaningful.

The National Lutheran Choir will be presenting our All Saints Concerts on November 1 and 6. This year’s theme is Blessed Are They. It is a program designed as a source for healing, comfort and hope for those that have experienced loss. The Nokomis has certainly experienced losses during the past year.

There is a reading of names. Participants and audiences are all invited to share names of loved ones. This year I will put Juana and Lucia on the list of names to be read in memory of their passing.

Performances are:

Sunday November 1 at 4:00 at St. Andrews in Mahtomedi.

Friday November 6 at 7:30 at  St. Bartholomew in Wayzata.
