Captain’s Log, March 2022

Greetings, Crew!

I hope you'll join us for our March General Membership Meeting on Saturday at noon. The Zoom link is posted online and in this newsletter.

At our meeting, we'll discuss the upcoming calendar of events. We're looking forward to in-person meetings, the 2022 C.A.T. Show on April 9th, an Escape Room outing on April 23rd, the Journey to Babble on May 14th, and more. Remember that everyone can suggest activities, so bring it on!

Special thanks to everyone that volunteered for the 17th Annual MarsCon American Red Cross Blood Drive last Saturday (Jane, Dawn and Roxanne, plus some awesome donors). We had 30 blood donors come to donate and collected 25 pints of life-saving blood! That's enough to touch up to 75 patients. Woo hoo! We love giving out our special Blood Donor badge ribbons, and it's fun to hear con-goers give kudos to those that earn them. We hope to host our next drive on August 13th at CONvergence.

We're looking forward to Saturday's St. Patrick's Day and Beer Tasting party. Thanks to everyone that signed up. We'll see you at 6pm on Saturday. It also happens to be The Girl's birthday, so we'll be having cake (just kidding, Emma hates cake)!!

See you around the Galaxy!

Mary

St. Patrick’s Day Beer Tasting is BACK!

We will be enjoying an in-person event this year on the 19th at the Captain's Quarters. Here’s the scoop:

  • The party will start at 6:00 PM.
  • You are encouraged to show your green side.
  • Beer tasting will start at 6:30pm.
  • Bring food to share.
  • Bring four to six bottles or cans of your favorite beer (alcoholic, non-alcoholic, homebrew, funny name, unique flavor, or whatever else you can find). You may even bring soda, if you think it’s better.
  • The winner(s) will receive a fabulous prize, chosen by your lovely hosts.

Please RSVP to Mary at if you are coming, so we can plan the tasting. We assume that all are vaccinated or have already made arrangements, but if you have questions, just ask.

Greetings, Crew!

Welcome to March, when there are a few important things to remember. First, the General Membership Meeting is on the third Saturday instead of the second Saturday. Yes, it's on the 19th. Last night at the Governing Board Meeting, we decided that the meeting will be virtual. We hope to have our April meeting in person - yeah!!!

Another thing to remember during March is MarsCon. USS Nokomis members will be in the hotel lobby on Saturday, March 12th greeting blood donors for our annual MarsCon blood drive from 10am to 4pm. Stop by and visit us. At this time, our extraordinary recruiter (First Officer Jane) has filled all of the slots, but donors tend to drop out on the day of the drive, so if you want to donate we will probably have a spot for you.

Finally, we are having an in-person beer tasting party this month for the first time since 2019! Woo hoo! It's on the evening of March 19th and details will be published in the next newsletter. It's also a St Patrick's Day party, and it falls on Emma's birthday, so we have three reasons to celebrate.

Other upcoming events of note:

  • April 3rd is the National Lutheran Choir Gala and you can volunteer
  • April 9th, after our General Membership Meeting, is the next C.A.T. Show. Bring your art, craft or talent (or all three) to share with the group. We'll also be having a bake sale, by popular demand
  • April 23rd is reserved for an escape room outing, so we'll be gauging interest at the March meeting

See you around the Galaxy!

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: February 23, 2022

Greetings, Crew!

I hope you all enjoyed Twosday yesterday. It was 2-22-22, and on a Tuesday! Can you name the 22nd episode of the 2nd season? It was "By Any Other Name", where galactic alien scouts captured the Enterprise for a return voyage to their home and a prelude to invasion. Thank goodness for Kirk's one advantage - they were not used to their adopted human form. The episode is notable for one of the most-quoted lines of all Trek: "It's green".

That profound observation is the sum total of your newsletter for this week. Thank you so much for reading.

Take care, and see you around the Galaxy!

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: February 16, 2022

Greetings, Crew!

Thanks to those of you that attended our February General Membership Meeting last weekend. It was a good one, with lots of information shared. Highlights:

  • Happy Big Birthday to Artie!!!
  • June's 38th Anniversary Picnic will be in person at West Bush Lake Park in Bloomington
  • We hope to have a St Patrick's Day Beer Tasting get-together on March 19th - more information at the March meeting
  • We'd love to go Curling, so we'll look in to this
  • The MarsCon Blood Drive is on March 12th, with lots of slots open
  • We'll have a C.A.T. Show (not felines, but Art, Craft & Talent) after our April Membership Meeting, no matter what the meeting format.

We'll keep you up to date with more details in coming weeks.

After the meeting, we had a hoot with our Kahoot game. The group wants to do it again, so we'll get it on the agenda again this year. It's never too early to send facts about yourself to me (it helps if you give lots of facts, like "I love X, Y and Z, but I hate B).

Take care, and see you around the Galaxy!

Greetings, Crew!

Don't look now, but Discovery is back tomorrow with the next portion of Season 4! We'll see six episodes, culminating in the season finale on March 17th. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Speaking of St. Patrick's Day, you'll hear news about the upcoming festivities at the meeting this Saturday, along with much more. The Zoom link is included below. After the meeting, we'll have the newest USS Nokomis Kahoot Quiz. How much do you know about your friends? Even if you're not sure much, come and play and have fun!

Have you signed up for the USS Nokomis MarsCon blood drive yet? It's on March 12th and we have soooo many open slots, so tell your family and friends. You can click on this LINK to schedule your appointment or search for the drive at redcrossblood.org using sponsor code MarsCon. You can also let First Officer Jane know and she can sign you up. This is our 17th annual MarsCon blood drive and so far we've touched over 1,200 lives. Let's make it even more!

Take care, and see you around the Galaxy!

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: 2-2-22

Greetings, Crew!

I read that a sequence of 2s is lucky, so I hope you're having a lucky day today! It's the only time we'll see four 2s in our lifetimes (unless you are a positronic being and I don't realize it). I feel pretty lucky to have seen the new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster that just hit the airwaves. Can you say "Tango"?

Have you heard about the 2022 LLAPy Awards? It's part of Virtual Trek Con 3, the third year of a virtual convention that launched in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. The Awards are not decided by an academy, but by the fans! All of the nominees were announced last night on The Main Viewer, and you can see them (and all of the categories) on the Virtual Trek Con Facebook page HERE. It's fun to see what people chose!

This is absolute last call for some delectable tidbits of information about you for next week's Kahoot game. I'm still pretty light on content, so email me ASAP.

That's it for now. Enjoy the chilly weather. See you around the Galaxy.

Mary
