March General Membership Meeting Zoom Link

Please join us for the upcoming membership meeting on Saturday. It's a good idea to join a few minutes early to check your tech.

This month our meeting is followed by the annual St Patrick's Beer Tasting party, so grab your green and join in. If you didn't already register for the beer tasting part and submit your beer, you are still welcome to join us for lunch and to observe as we taste and make funny faces. The beer tasting is targeted to start between 1:30 and 2:00.

Another Successful Blood Drive!!

Thanks so much for everyone that participated in making our 16th annual MarsCon blood drive a success! We collected 24 pints of blood on our goal of 20, which is outstanding. Several members donated, greeted donors, took temperatures, recruited people to come, or stopped by to give moral support. We brought our total number of donors recruited to over 1,600, and the pints collected in our many blood drives to 1,342, which is enough to touch over 4,000 lives. That's really incredible, and few organizations can say the same. Congratulations on making a difference!

Real World Application of Trek

Maybe we've all done it? I know that I've used the principles learned from Star Trek (staring at age 3) in my real life. Yah, it's no coincidence that there's a book called "All I Really Need To Know I Learned From Watching Star Trek." Here's an article from StarTrek.com that caught my eye. It's called "Loss and "The Loss:" How Deanna Troi Counseled Me Through COVID-19." This writer talks about how Trek has helped him with the (temporary) loss of taste and smell, and it hits home.

How many times have I been sitting in a conference room, wanting to jump over the table with my bat'leth, and it helped me to think "What would Captain Kirk do?" Actually that's a really bad example, because Captain Kirk would just grab a phaser, but perhaps Captain Picard could have served as a role model where diplomacy was required. I know, however, that there have been a lot of really good examples in my life, so this piqued my interest. If you'd like to read about this Trek fan's experience, click HERE

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies

After the numerous questions and lamentations about the lack of Girl Scout Cookie availability this year, a solution has presented itself!

Many of our members use MarsCon as their source every year, as the girls sell cookies at a table. One of our friends from MarsCon has provided a link that you can use to order online. If you're interested in buying from Anna, drop me an email and I'll send you her link. If anyone else has a Girl Scout, please let me know and I'll share that link, too. I, for one, will buy from any Scout that asks me!

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: March 3, 2021

Greetings, Crew!

We have a couple of important dates coming in the next two weeks. The MarsCon Blood Drive is on Saturday the 6th, and we hope to get to 1,150 pints of blood collected by our many drives over the years. That's over 3,000 lives touched by our blood drive recruitment and hosting, and it's pretty awesome! Our appointments are full and we're excited. If you're donating, we'll see you there! Also, if you tried to get an appointment and couldn't because we are full, please drop me a line and I'll tell you where another opportunity awaits.

We'll also be enjoying our annual beer tasting next week after the membership meeting. Those who signed up have already submitted their beers, and we're looking forward to a blind tasting, virtually. Well, we'll we able to see each other, just not the beers. Actually, we'll be able to see the beers (because otherwise we would dribble), but not the names. Well, we know each others' names, but not......just never mind.

Of course, there's the upcoming meeting on March 13th. I'll be sending out more information in next week's newsletter, including the Zoom link.

Short and sweet this week. See you around the Galaxy!

Greetings, Crew!

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying our emergence into spring. That may be a little optimistic with March coming on, but temperatures above 40 are in sight! Woo hoo!

I'd like to give a shout-out to our club members that are participating in the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair this week. The 2020 fair was one of the last things we did before things closed down, and the organizers have found a way to keep the student experience alive and well. Judging of papers took place over the last few weeks and was all done online. Today is the last day of virtual project judging, which has been fun because you get to watch each student in a 10-minute recorded presentation. This is great for a judge since you get to view the student without the outside influences of friends, noise and nerves that usually accompany an on-floor discussion. On Friday, the judges will get to (virtually) interact directly with the students whose projects they have judged. All in all, it's a great solution for the prickly problem of hosting a fair during the pandemic!

Speaking of Friday, plan to join us for our virtual pizza party this Friday after the Science Fair is over. We'll begin at 9pm, so order or bake your pizza, grab a beverage, and get on the Zoom! Details are below.

Finally, thanks very much to the few people that have sent recipes for our 2021 cookbook. Drop yours in an email and send them to me at .

See you around the Galaxy!

It’s Been a Long Road…

After several delays, production on Star Trek: Picard's season 2 began last week. It joins four other Star Trek series in production or pre-production. Yes, you read that right - there will be FIVE Star Trek series in the works in 2021!

Star Trek: Discovery's fourth season has been in production since November. Also, Spock actor Ethan Peck posted some pictures from Toronto last week, leading fans to the assumption that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is beginning rehearsals. In addition to the three live-action Star Trek shows, there are also two animated shows in production. The second season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is coming this year, along with the first season of the kids show Star Trek: Prodigy.

Check out some details HERE

Friday Pizza Party!

We're having a late-evening pizza get-together at 9pm on Friday, and you are all invited! Grab your pizza, beverage and favorite blankie and join us.

Don't eat pizza? Eat something else! Aren't planning to comb your hair or get out of your jammies? Us either! Actually, those of us that are judging for the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair probably will have to get gussied up, just because the students are going to be looking at us, but you don't have to! Captain’s Log, Supplemental: February 17, 2021

Greetings, Crew!

We are now officially into our 12th month of virtual activities! Here are some great ideas for you to do on your keyboard:

  • Send me an email with some of your favorite recipes to be included in our upcoming cookbook. If you don't want to type out the whole thing, Google your recipe and see if you can cut and paste instead. Grandma's recipe may have more or less of a particular ingredient, but you can easily adjust that. I've found the most obscure recipes right there on the internet!
  • Jot down a few facts about yourself and email them to me. We had so much fun playing the Nokomis Members Quiz on Saturday that we're planning to do it again. Even if you've already sent something, bring 'em on! Really, it's fun to learn silly little facts and surprising tidbits about each other, and the competition is fun too!

We're coming out of our cold snap now, so here's hoping for warm days ahead! See you around the Galaxy!
