Happy Birthday to the Gorn!

Did you know that the Star Trek Original Series episode "Arena" premiered on January 19, 1967? The first appearance of the Gorn sparked multiple references in later Trek series. In addition, there are Gorn action figures (yah, I got mine), Gorn costumes (who would wear that?) and even several Gornaments for your tree.

In honor of this important birthday, StarTrek.com has compiled a list of Gorn references over the years. These Easter Eggs are sometimes obvious, and sometimes hard to see. They range from the Gorn appearing as an Elysian Councilor in the Animated Series, to the mention of Bones delivering eight Gorn babies - one of which bit him - in Star Trek: Into Darkness, to that crazy Gorn skeleton of Captain Lorca's. Those writers do love their Gorn! You can find all of these Easter Eggs HERE

It’s Time For Another Cookbook!

Many of you may remember that the USS Nokomis published a fantastic cookbook in 2000. It was a big hit at the time - so much so that an addendum was published later. Well, we're doing it again!

One big change we've had since our first book is the institution of annual Valentine Dinners. Every year since 2009, chefs Emma, Shannon and Harrison have created formal, gourmet meals for us. This means that there are lots of wonderful recipes to share, and they will be part of the book.

The other source of recipes will be YOU. It's time to start sending in your favorites to be included in the new book. Categories include:

  • Appetizers & Beverages
  • Soups, Salads & Vegetable
  • Main Dishes & Casseroles
  • Meat, Poultry & Seafood
  • Breads & Rolls
  • Pies, Pastries & Desserts
  • Cakes, Cookies & Candy
  • This & That

There is no limit to the number of recipes you can submit, so give us your best! Did you get a lot of compliments at the last potluck? Is a particular recipe your personal favorite, or maybe your guilty pleasure?

You can start sending recipes to now. We'll collect them for a few months and hope to get the book together by summer. This will be another treasure for your kitchen, and it will be better with more submissions!

Star Trek and Stewart Win Awards

On Sunday night, the first-ever Critics Choice Super Awards aired. Star Trek shows were up for a total of seven awards with nominations for Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Both Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery were nominated for Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Series. Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green was nominated as Best Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series. Star Trek: Lower Decks had three nominations: Best Animated Series, Jack Quaid for Best Voice Actor, and Tawny Newsome for Best Voice Actress. Of all seven nominees, only Sir Patrick Stewart won for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series (for his work in Star Trek: Picard).

The Critics Choice Association also presented the first Legacy Award to the Star Trek franchise “recognizing the cultural impact it has had across multiple decades while continuing to appeal to and grow its loyal fanbase with new stories and characters.” Well, we all knew THAT!!!

How would you have done in the Scavenger Hunt?

We held the first online Scavenger Hunt after the last Nokomis meeting.  There were 20 clues or questions in the 30 minute hunt;  if you knew the answer you got points; if you brought the answer to the screen you got even more points.  How would you have done?

Here's the clues. Some are Trek related, some are not.

  1. What is yours but is always used by others more than by you?
  2. Some take me in the morning, some at night. But when I'm taken I don't go anywhere.
  3. I have eyes but cannot see. With great power comes my great responsibility.
  4. The more I dry, the wetter I become
  5. Just one of me you can have not, because if you have one you have a lot.
  6. What starts with a T, ends in a T, and is full of it?
  7. What has teeth but cannot eat?
  8. I make something black and blue, and Red all over? Who am I?
  9. King or Queen I may not be,  but your measure is what I see
  10. I rise to the occasion when put on the spot, you'll know who I am and who I am not. Who am I?
  11. I have ring, but I have no finger.
  12. I am full of holes but still hold water.
  13. One sheet, two sheet, three sheet, four - some use less, some use more
  14. I have a face but never frown, I have hands but do not wave. I answer one question with many different answers.
  15. I have not flesh, feather, or bone, yet I have fingers and thumbs of my own
  16. Forward I am heavy, backward I am not.
  17. I can be held in your left hand but not your right. You give a thumbs up when you get this one.
  18. Sometimes I'm portable, sometimes I ain't. When interacting with mice I am called quaint.
  19. I appear ones in every minute, twice in every moment, not once in a thousand years?
  20. I cannot be burned in a fire nor drowned in water.  I'm an enemy of one and friend to the other.

I'll post the answers in next week's newsletter.  Good Luck!

PayPal and Venmo and Post (Oh Myyyy!)

Now there are more and more options for paying for things these days, and we're doing our best to allow as many as we can.    Log in to the web page for details about each.

  • Cash is classic, checks are just as good.  You can hand them over or mail them in.  Address information is visible when you log in.
  • PayPal started as a payment clearing house for buying things on the Internet, like stuff on Ebay.  You can use your PayPal account if you have one.
  • PayPal is also our clearing house for credit cards.  They've branched out now to being more of a full service merchant service, so they take credit cards, bank transfers, and a host of other services.
  • Venmo is strictly person to person, using mobile device apps to keep it simple and well-protected.  You'll need to have a Venmo account of your own to send money to us that way.

The Nokomis is set to use all of these.  Log in to see our contact info.

Ebay Store Update

The Nokomis eBay store continues to run just fine. eBay recently changed the format for listing items to sell, so pages have been updated and are going back up.
The name of the Nokomis store is: stcollectibles7

If you have questions, or items to donate to the store, let me know.

2021 Calendar is ready!

This year's calendar is a little different, and a lot more fun.  You can view the preview at this Walmart Photo link.

Unfortunately, Walmart will not let me put text into the grid for the dates each month. Therefore, the meetings and events that we have on the docket for 2021 will not be listed this year.

If you want to order the calendar, send $17.50 -- cost, tax and shipping -- to my email through paypal to:   .

Send me an email with your mailing address, if I don't have it on file from years past, and I will order your calendar to be shipped directly to your home.

If you have a Walmart photo account you may be able to order your own, too.

A New Year, a few New Spins

With the start of a New Year, let's try some new ways to do some traditional after-meeting events.  Here's two that are coming almost right away.

Scavenger Hunt - We've done a few of them, hunting around the Mall of America for the answers to cryptic clues.  In January we'll spin it just a little differently.  After the regular business meeting, I'll send you all an email with the clues, and the answers should be something you have at home. Don't worry, we're not gonna make you take a picture with a mannequin (who has that?) but we might ask for a picture of one. We'll keep it to half an hour to find as many things as you can, and we'll do a quick grade online.  Care to try? Come to the January meeting

Beer Tasting Rabble- For 5 years in a row we headed out to new brew places on the road to try new places and new flavors.  We've also brought them together for tasting contest - so here's the spin.  At the February meeting I'll ask for who wants to participate.  We'll need to know how many at that time so we know how many households need beer samples.  Yep, we're gonna do it at home.  Sometime in late February I'll drive around and pick up all the samples and 'obscure' them from view with paint or something.  They'll be numbered so we can all try and grade them at the same time.  Just think: Lots of samples to taste, and no possibility of having too much to drive.  Interested?  Come to the February meeting to find out how it all works.

I expect we'll still be at home in March and just about ready to chew the furniture.  A little distraction might help, and with luck we'll all be together sometime in the summer.

Cheers

Phill Goldman

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: December 30th, 2020 – Happy New Year!!

Greetings, Crew!

Can you believe we are starting the 37th year with a USS Nokomis?!?!? Back in 1984, we surely could not have imagined the twists and turns we'd go through. Hopefully, 2021 will be a bright - if strange - new world! I am so excited to see everyone in person!

Thanks to everyone that came to our holiday get-together. It was really fun! It's so nice to see everyone's faces and just sit and have fun. Thanks to everyone that helped to plan the event, too.

True to form, your generosity came through in our Toys for Tots collection. As one of the three major facets of our organization, service to the community is so important to us. It's heartwarming to see it continue while we are living in a virtual world.

Congratulations to Jane, Dave and Emma, who won the fabulous prizes in our fun games! We played Guess the Gift, jointly completed some Mad Libs, and had our first run through a Kahoot Quiz about our members. The Kahoot Quiz was built from the fun facts you've shared with me over the last weeks, and we learned a lot of interesting information. If you haven't sent me your fun facts, please do. If you have sent me facts and have some more, keep 'em coming! The plan is to have another round in February.

Here's some fun news - one of the teams with USS Nokomis members won TC Trek Trivia this month! It was close, and at one point five of the seven teams were tied, but in the end there's always one winner! Congrats to the winners!

As always, don't hesitate to reach out to the board if you have ideas or requests. Have a great week, here's to the New Year, and see you around the Galaxy!
