We're gonna laugh to the comedy stylings of Don McMillan at the Loons on the Lake Comedy Festival, June 24th at 7PM. The event happens at Crooners Supper Club Main Stage in Fridley.
Don has been on many TV and Comedy Stages, you may have seen him on America's Got Talent last season. He's Geek Chic, and centers his clean act on PowerPoint.
About a dozen of us already have tickets. You will need to buy your own, and we'll try to see if we can sit together. Once you have your tickets, add your name to the Sign Up Sheet. One week after the Picnic meeting we'll call the venue to see if we can be seated together. Most of us have the basic seating.
Our (mostly) annual Beer Tour will be Saturday, May 20, starting at noon. This year's tour covers the vast space of one single block in Minneapolis. You heard that right -- park once, walk to four different taprooms!
We'll start here and grab some delicious BBQ! They also have house-brewed beers, or cocktails or wine if you're not a beer person.
After filling up, we'll just wander along to the next places. These are all within a block or so, so I have no particular order in mind. Go where you want, when you want!
Beer and selzers, plus the Philly Xpress food truck if you're still hungry...
Not enough for you? Wander down 6th Ave a block past Fulton and find First Draft Taproom & Kitchen. Hang a right on 3rd St from there, hey look it's Modist Brewing! Right across the street from Bricksworth Beer!
Parking
Metered parking is available all along 5th St. Free 2-hour parking is also available on 10th Ave, which is about two blocks further up 5th St.
I hope you can join us at the White Bear Lake Library on Saturday and noon for our May meeting. We have lots to discuss, with all of the upcoming events and activities. Remember that you can also join by Zoom if you can't make it in person - although we love to see your smiling face in 3D!
Thank you for the donation to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital to honor my father. He would have been very happy, not only with the donation, but also the fact that I have such supportive friends in my life.
Lots of fun coming in May and June, so mark your calendars. There's a TC Trek Trivia night next Wednesday, the 10th, followed by our General Membership Meeting on the 13th. We'll go on our annual Journey to Babble on the 20th. June 10th is our 39th Anniversary Picnic at West Bush Lake Park (with membership meeting), and just 5 days later is the premier of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Season 2. We're also working on some other fun activities in June. We hope to see you!
I'm off to enjoy the nice weather. See you around the Galaxy!
Well, did you watch it? If not, hurry up so we can talk about it without worrying about spoilers! I know that I got all the feels. Speaking of feels, if you haven't been watching The Ready Room along with Picard, you're missing out. Wil Wheaton does an amazing job of channeling all of our inner geeks and going behind the scenes. This is true of all current Trek, of course, and will continue when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fires up on June 15th.
Here's something to think about, and we'll be discussing it at our next few meetings to make a plan. We are 40 years old next year and we deserve a party! We've done some fun things in the past, most recently our Mississippi River cruise for the 30th and our big bash for the 35th. We've thrown two great parties for the Twin Cities Trek community in recent years, and we are masters of putting together fun events. Bottom line: please think about how YOU would like to celebrate the big event next year. We'll be deciding on an approach soon.
This is urgent: if you are willing to help with set-up, take-down and room duties at CONvergence from July 6th to the 9th, let me know ASAP. At present, we do not have enough hands to host a party room. The decision is due this week.
We had a great time on Saturday with our multiple activities. Many thanks to our hosts for a great place to visit and work. During the business meeting we identified a few new events/dates for our upcoming calendar. We're looking forward to the Journey to Babble on May 20th, the Anniversary Picnic on June 10th, and hoping for a Como Zoo visit and a comedy club outing sometime in June. We've got the CONvergence Blood Drive on July 7th and we'll have a party room if there are enough hands to do the work. Side note: let me know if you have hands to do some of the work. Later in the summer, we are hoping to go to Allianz Field to see the Loons play. There's also a date for the 2023 Garden Party: August 12th. Lots of stuff going on, that's for sure.
After the meeting we saw some fine work from our members at the CAT Show. This year's displays included miniature architecture, quilting, floral displays, photography and cake decorating. The potluck meal also featured the skills of our members, and it was all yummmm.
Finally, we supported My Very Own Bed by making four blankets. The hours of effort were surely worth it, as they turned out beautifully. It's fun to imagine a child receiving the gift of their very own bed (which will also include sheets, pillow, bed and other cozy items) while in transition to a safe place to sleep.
Our thoughts are with Melanie, whose father passed recently. Our sympathies go to Melanie, Cory, and the whole family. The funeral will be on Saturday, and we have chosen to honor Russ with a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. We will make a donation from the club, and you are welcome to contribute. As always, you can use PayPal (send to ) or Venmo (@USS-Nokomis). You can also send a check if needed.
And in case you missed yesterday's big news.....wait for it.....we're going to get a Section 31 story after all, and it's going to be a feature film instead of a TV series! According to the official logline “Emperor Philippa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” Production on the film begins later this year. Sounds intriguing, yes?
Wow, what a change! Last week I was looking at a snowy landscape while writing my log, and today it's going to be over 80 degrees. Still some snow, but how long can it last (knock on wood)?
This week our meeting is going to be unusual and fun. First, it will not be at a library, but at a private home. Many thanks in advance to Lynne and Phill for having us! Second, everyone will have a chance to share their crafts, arts, and talents after the business meeting during the annual CAT Show. Then we'll enjoy a potluck meal made by everyone (so bring along something to share). Finally, we'll tie some fleece blankets to donate to My Very Own Bed, a Minneapolis organization that provides beds, bedding and Dream Kits to children who are transitioning to safe spaces. More information about the day is in the meeting announcement below.
Are you looking for something fun to do tonight? Let me know if you would like to join our team at TC Trek Trivia at 7pm at the Driftwood Char Bar. We can always use some more friends to play.
Take care everyone, and see you around the Galaxy!
