Movie Night

Movie night was a lot of fun, thank you Lynn and Phill for letting us invade your home.  It was cozy and a lot of food was to be had.  I hope everyone enjoyed themselves.  Usually I do not post but I just wanted to say thank you to everyone and my blister is healing from chopping all those vegetables finally.  I am very impressed to see our new members just jumping right in and enjoying what we have done so far.  I hope that more new members attend our functions as time goes by.  Thank you Mary for making up the menu and coordinating and thank you Jack for all of his trips to the store.  You all are awesome.

Captain’s Log December 2016

It's nearly here - the end of the year! We've sure had fun celebrating the 50th anniversary of our favorite show. I am continually amazed at what this wonderful group can do!

We've done two amazing room parties at MarsCon and CONvergence. The Bread and Circuses room had fantastic sets, great costumes and tons of atmosphere. The crowds (on-air and in reality) went wild! At CONvergence, our two-room extravaganza was oohed and aahed by all. We served tons of replicated food and nearly 2,000 drinks and entertained as only we can.

We have also had lots of other fun. Dinners and plays, a new movie, tasting beer at the St Patrick's party and the brewery tour, working together to raise funds at our lovely chuckwagon, getting together at the lake for the 30th time, two formal dinners, a movie night and the upcoming holiday party and outing. Wow, we have fun!

Think of the good we have done for others this year: saving lives at our blood drives, packing food for starving children, expanding young minds at the science fair, booing at the Zoo, helping at the NLC gala, and donating funds to charity. This is one of the very strongest parts of this group - using the power of teamwork to help others - and you should be very proud.

And speaking of proud, let's not forget the Trek 50 party. Really, it was a blast. The food was great, the props were fun, the music was hoppin', the costume contest had excellent participation, and lots of you pitched in to help. Our goal was to throw the best possible celebration, and we hit our mark! A whole bunch of new faces came to enjoy the evening with us, too.

A hallmark of the year has been fellowship. We, of course, always have fun together. This year, we expanded our vision and invited more participation by other clubs. Several of the other local clubs joined us at multiple functions, and best of all, we have a bunch of new members to share our good times!

I hope you have all enjoyed your year as much as I. Your governing board spends lots of time and thought to balance the best activities for the group. If you have additional suggestions, you are always welcome!

Have a wonderful holiday season. See you around the galaxy!

Mary

Holiday Party on Saturday!

Don't forget our get-together at Kline’s this Saturday (4808 River Wood Circle, Savage) from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Here's your list of things to do:

  1. Dress in your holiday duds - whatever that means to you!
  2. Bring a little gift ($10) if you'll be participating in the exchange.
  3. Whip up your favorite recipe for the potluck dinner.
  4. Cozy slippers for keeping your tootsies warm.

We are excited to see you!

Hats and Mittens Reminder

At the November meeting, we collected hats and mittens for Hats and Mittens. This charity provides hats, mittens and gloves to those in need of them, plus contributes to other youth-oriented charities. We're trying to break our record from last year, so you have one more chance to bring them to the holiday party on the 10th. See you there!

Movie Night Update

Movie Night Weekend is just six days away!

Twenty-five folks got their signups and payment in before the October 22nd deadline passed.   The money goes  completely for the wonderful snacks for the night.  Mary and Dawn needed both the count and the payment early enough to buy food and prepare it for the event - it's all hand-made.

Not the Actual Theater. We only wish...

In the meantime, Star Trek Beyond is now available at home through DVD, BluRay and Pay Per View.  Care for a flashback?

Hats and mittens (and gloves) for Hats and Mittens!

Nokomis friends,
Some of you may recall the Nokomis helped a charity called Hats and Mittens last year. This is a charity started by Rebecca Jorgenson Sundquist who is on my board at the National Lutheran Choir. Several other NLC members help out with this event and Karen and I attend each year. Hats and Mittens was started by Rebecca when she noticed kids at the bus stop without hats or mittens. People attending the gala bring a set of hats and mittens as a part of the admission. It doesn't stop there. Hats and Mittens also sponsors a youth-oriented organization each year. One year it was cookie cart which employs young people to give them purpose, structure, a place to go, and keep them off the street. A different group receives the donations of the gala each year. There are many worthy applications and the decision as to what group to honor is a tough one. This is a worthwhile charity.
This is where you come in. Last year the Nokomis donated 31 sets of hats and mittens. The demand exceeds the supply and requests come from unexpected places such as Edina. Teen sizes are also needed. You can often find hats and mittens (or gloves as mittens are hard to find) on sale somewhere or on clearance. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Karen and I have a good start with 10 sets. Let’s see if we can break last year’s record. You can bring your contribution to the November meeting or the December Christmas party.
Thanks you for your kind contributions last year and for considering helping again this year.

Captain’s Log November 2016

Greetings, crew!

I hope you all had a great Halloween. I had a chance to get in to four of my costumes between work and events. This was my 22nd year passing out candy at work, which was pretty cool. Now it's on to the other holidays and the new year!

Please join us for the November meeting. We'll have the second annual awards presentation for activities during the past year, plus a fantastic bake sale. Remember that your dues should have been paid for the past year, so if you are late make sure to contact a board member immediately. We want you to continue receiving the newsletter and other important updates and communications!

We will soon decide on our involvement in the upcoming MarsCon convention. If you have input to give, plan to attend our meeting. We'll make the final determination of whether to have a party room and what our theme will be. The theme of the convention, which runs March 3 to 5, is "Dragons in Space". The date will be announced at the November meeting.

That's all for now. We'll see you at the meeting!

Save The Date for Holiday Fun!

The Annual Christmas Dinner will be hosted at the Kline’s this year (4808 River Wood Circle, Savage) on Saturday, December 10, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The dinner this year will be potluck. We would ask that you think extra special and festive, dressing in your Christmas finery and preparing your special recipes. We will need a few appetizers, some hearty, delicious hot dishes, salads, rolls, trimmings etc. and a few desserts. I will be posting a sign-up sheet for attendance and food items at the November meeting and there will also be sign-up sheets posted on the USS Nokomis website. We would ask that you bring along your inside shoes/slippers as we will need you to remove your outside shoes.

Want to participate in a gift exchange?  Bring it along, we'll exchange it.

Be comfortable and treat Pam's home with care - bring some warm slippers with you and stay cozy all evening.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
