Sad News from Art Johnson

Lucia SmilesOur good and dear friend Lucia Johnson left us last night, October 13th after a long battle with cancer.  She passed peacefully in her sleep.

Lucia fought cancer, one battle after another for more than a decade.  In all that time she never gave up, never surrendered.  She is one of the strongest people you'll ever meet.  Even though her battle is over and her time to rest is here, she's still a fine example to all of us. She's a hero.

Funeral Arrangements:

Monday - all events at All Saints Catholic Church in Lakeville

  • Visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 AM
  • Funeral Mass from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • Luncheon in the Parish School Cafeteria at 12:00 PM

Her formal obituary can be found here on the Star Tribune's website.

Captain’s Log – October 2015

If you missed our September meeting, you missed a lot! We went over the calendar for the upcoming year, which is full of fun stuff. We collected dues from lots of folks (because they're all due in September now). Best of all, we had a great time bowling and mingling with some guests from other clubs. Plus we ate, of course! We also discussed the celebration of longevity that will happen at the October meeting. Don't miss the fun. After the meeting we are going out to Claddagh for a celebration dinner. Don't miss it!

Speaking of the upcoming year's calendar: Remember that the Board works hard to find good and fun activities for everyone. We include social activities, fundraisers and charitable events. Sometimes an event might fit into more than one of those categories. The source of inspiration is the crew, so never hesitate to bring forward your ideas for fun stuff. I found a charitable event just last weekend for next September, so it's never too early to suggest something fun. This year, we particularly need input on some events for the 50th Anniversary of Trek. We're only as much fun as our ideas are!

Don't forget to sign up for Zoo Boo, too. We all have lots of fun greeting the kids, and then a group goes out to eat. It's usually at a nearby restaurant like Old Chicago or Stout's. Watch for more information.

See you at the October meeting. In case I didn't mention it, we're having a celebration!

See you around the galaxy!

CONstruction Day and Board meeting on October 4th, not the 3rd!

At the September meeting we announced that there would be a construction day and Board meeting on the 3rd of October, but this day HAS BEEN CHANGED. Please mark your calendars for the 4th at 10am. We'll have the Governing Board meeting and then move into construction by about 11am. After we finish (surprise!) we will find a place to lunch. Bring your tools and energy and be ready to go through the props. If it rains, please call Mary to determine whether we will work with props. The Board meeting goes on, rain or shine.

Captain’s Log September 2015

Greetings crew!

Welcome to fall and a new year for the USS Nokomis. I hope everyone had a great summer like we did. Graduation for Harrison, Patriots Marching Band season, a few travel opportunities, and a Mary and Harrison European cruise kept us crazy-busy! Now it's back to school, the Fair and other fall fun, including the new Vikings season!

We start our USS Nokomis year at the September meeting with a few important activities that you won't want to miss:

First, we will recap all of the fun we had over the summer. This summer was full of good times we'd like to share, especially if you were not able to join us.

Next, we'll see a proposal from the Governing Board for the next year and a half. This will include social activities, fundraising ideas, and charitable pursuits. If you have ideas to add, you can still do so until September 11th by getting them to any Board member. All ideas are most welcome.

Finally, we'll be collecting dues from all members. Remember that everyone owes dues at the same time from now on, regardless of the month you joined the club. We'll have a celebration of everyone's years in October.

These activities are in addition to our usual agenda, so don't miss the meeting! We also have a super activity planned for afterwards!

See you around the Galaxy!

Dues are Due – Don’t Forget!

Remember that your dues are due (no pun intended) in September, regardless of your anniversary month,  unless you have already paid in 2015. All dues will be due each September for now on. This will allow us to have a fabulous celebration of unbelievable longevity for all in October!

If you are going to miss the September meeting (and we hope you aren't, because it's a biggy and it has a bowling party after), don't despair. You can get your dues to Pam by mail if necessary. Let her know your plans if you need to, as she'll be putting together a reminder notification to those who miss September's deadline.

Please remember that you must pay by the drop-dead time - BEFORE the October meeting - in order to be included in the October celebration. Plus, you won't get newsletters any more, and then how will you know what's going on?

If you have questions, the Governing Board is here to help.

The Garden Party Bloomed!

Okay, that's a bit of a silly title, but it was a great evening! Emma, Shannon and Harrison put together a lovely meal in a lovely setting. Eleven crew members enjoyed the following menu:

First Course: Roast Beef Summer Rolls with Asian Dipping Sauce, Roasted Summer Squash Soup Shots with Creme Fraiche, and Cauliflower Cheese Nuggets. The cocktail of the evening was DragonBerry Lemonade.

Second Course: Creamy Cucumber Salad with Dill

Main Course: Orzo with Pesto Vinaigrette, Summer Vegetables and Grilled Shrimp, and Zucchini Boats with Roasted Corn and Cotijo Cheese.

Dessert Course: Banana Cream Pie Bites, Chocolate Mousse with Raspberries and Chambord Whipped Cream, and Strawberry Nutella Wontons dusted with Powdered Sugar.

All that remains to be said is YUM. They did an amazing job. The amount of funds raised will be announced at the meeting. We just hope that they keep these dinners coming!

Paulsen Lake 2015

The Lake overnighter/outing was great fun!  We started with the fish fry/supper at Friendly's in Star Prairie. Since It was hot and muggy, some enjoyed staying indoors with the air conditioning. Even though we had a smaller group than usual, everyone enjoyed swimming, playing assorted games, adult beverages, eating and snacking, riding on the pontoon, visiting with Nokomis friends near and far, or doing nothing. No rain!
Mark made omelets on Sunday and Joann added some fabulous blueberry pancakes.
As for next year, Mark has some commitments in August. We are trying to find a workable weekend which may mean moving to July or August.
Thanks to everyone for an enjoyable weekend and being "well behaved".
Mark and Karen

Movie Night Honored Leonard Nimoy

This year's Mermaid Star Drive-In Experience, which took place on August 29th, was a tribute to our dear departed friend Leonard. We watched some fun non-Trek content, such as Leonard's rendition of Bilbo Baggins and some of his TV appearances. The main features includ
