Captain’s Log, Supplemental: May 19, 2021

Greetings, Crew!

Finally, some wonderful weather! We enjoyed a weekend getaway to New Orleans since last week's newsletter, and the weather was hot and sunny - quite a welcome change. It's great here, too, when it's not sprinkling. I hope everyone is getting a chance to get out - or at least open a window - and enjoy the fresh air.

Speaking of fresh air, have you marked your calendar for August 12th? That's the night we'll gather in the backyard theater to watch the Season 2 premier of Star Trek: Lower Decks (plus more episodes, undoubtedly). All of the new Trek is so exciting, especially now that half of the first Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season is filmed. I wish they'd announce that premier date - love to get THAT on the calendar! Also, get July 11th on there for our 37th anniversary picnic.

That's it for now - see you around the Galaxy!

Mary

Attention, Comic Book Lovers!

Comic book and graphic novel publisher IDW announced a year-long mirror universe project this week, and it sounds great. The series, Star Trek: The Mirror War, "invites readers to witness what the galaxy could be like at the mercy of a Captain Picard whose greatness is measured in cunning and cruelty." It weaves together threads from previous mirror universe tales. Starting in September will come issues 0 through 8, plus four tie-in publications that each focus on a specific crew member (starting with Data in December). In total, the 13-part saga will "chart Mirror Picard’s path of conquest across all of the Mirror Universe, stoking the wrath of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance along the way." Check out more HERE

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: May 12, 2021

Greetings, Crew!

Big news here in Minnesota since last week's log - we are going to see big changes in the COVID-19 restrictions in the next weeks! Our previous plan - to meet in person for our annual picnic - looks like it's going to be a reality. We've delayed until July 11th and will still meet virtually in June. Our plan for that Sunday is to gather at West Bush Lake Park (shelter #2, not our usual shelter #1), with its wide open spaces and ample parking. We'll have a brief meeting, but the day will be all about visiting (and hopefully a Peep Toss). More information will follow, so mark your calendars!

Did you hear that Paramount has announced its date for the next Star Trek movie? It's June 9, 2023, so we have lots of time to speculate. Will it be the Kelvin timeline or the Prime timeline? Chris Pine or somebody else? Good Jeannie or Evil Jeannie? Oops, wrong show. Anyway, I'm excited that there's a plan at last!

Thanks to everyone that supported our Pampered Chef party and the resulting fundraiser for Feed My Starving Children. I'll soon have the total of our funds raised to share with you.

If anyone wants to join my team for TC Trek Trivia tonight at 7pm, just let me know via email.

See you around the Galaxy!

Mary

Captain’s Log: May 2021

Greetings, Crew!

Although I missed it by a day, May the Fourth Be With You!! And happy Cinco de Mayo today!! And don't forget tomorrow: The Revenge of the Sixth!! Geez, it's a big week...

We hope you'll join us for this weekend's virtual General Membership Meeting (the Zoom link is below). We'll hear lots of updates about our upcoming plans, including getting back to some in-person events!

Did you see that there is a Minnesota State Fair event on Memorial Day weekend? I sure hope I win the lottery to get in! My big post-pandemic goal is to go to every single day of the Fair this year, so it will be good practice. OK, I have other goals too, but that one is a fun biggie!

Speaking of fun, do join us for the Virtual Scavenger Hunt this Saturday after the meeting. Phill did a fantastic job of putting together questions for the last one, and they had us rolling in the aisles. He's doing it again and you're all welcome. Everything you need is in your own head or in your home, so no special preparation is required. Plus, it will be great to see your face!

I haven't mentioned this for a while, but I still need more recipes for our 2021 USS Nokomis Cookbook. Do you have any fun extras, like candies, condiments, or sauces? That section is very light right now, so please send me your great ideas.

I want to wish a happy Mother's Day to all of the parents in the group, and to the parents of everyone, too! Have a wonderful weekend and see you around the Galaxy!

Mary

Blood Drive Follow-up News

Did you ever wonder what happens to the blood we donate - and help others to donate - at our blood drives? Thanks to the club's efforts, thousands of blood products have been sent to help patients in need. Here's a fun message that came in this week, showing five examples of specific shipments to area hospitals. The rest of the products will also be delivered to other patients, next door or across the country. It's fun to see the fruits of our efforts, isn't it?

GalaxyCon brings back Shatner and Lloyd

Did you miss Captain Kirk the last time he appeared at GalaxyCon? He's coming back on May 9th with his buddy Kruge, aka Christopher Lloyd. Meet them with GalaxyCon Live at 2pm ET on Saturday, May 8th. You can Video Chat One-to-One, Get Personalized Autographs, and see a FREE Live Stream Q&A.

If you haven't checked our GalaxyCon lately, click HERE to see all of the choices on the schedule. From Star Trek and Star Wars to Halloween and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's crazy the variety they have! And it's all virtual. Have fun exploring!

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: April 14, 2021

Greetings, Crew!

This week we celebrate the International Day of Human Space Flight. April 12th, 1961 was the date of the first human space flight, carried out by Yuri Gagarin. On April 7, 2011 the General Assembly of the United Nations declared April 12th as the International Day of Human Space Flight “to celebrate each year at the international level the beginning of the space era for mankind, reaffirming the important contribution of space science and technology in achieving sustainable development goals and increasing the well-being of States and peoples, as well as ensuring the realization of their aspiration to maintain outer space for peaceful purposes.”

Also on April 12th, 40 years ago, the first space shuttle flight occurred with the launching of Space Shuttle Columbia from Kennedy Space Center. I remember being in school and having the TVs brought in so we could watch! Check out this video and get goosebumps like I did HERE

We also celebrated the accomplishments of our members after Saturday's meeting with the C.A.T. Show. See the article in this newsletter about some of the wonderful things we saw. We've always known that we have a huge talent pool related to props, sets and costumes, and there are so many other amazing skills and ideas, too!

Tonight is the April installment of TC Trek Trivia, and you're all invited to join my team. The theme is United Federation of Cool Cats. I love these theme teasers because they always get me thinking - what could it mean!??? Let me know ASAP if you want to join the team and I'll send along the link.

Finally, we have a fun opportunity for those who like to make stuff. Click HERE for the Facebook event: Cutting Board Class @ Barley John's. We discussed doing this last year, but it got cold before we could set it up! On June 6th at 1pm, the class will take place on Barley John's patio. You get to learn about types of woods, pick your colors, and design your own board. They go back with the woodworker to be finished and then are delivered back in a few weeks. I will pick up the boards for anyone that wants me to, and get them to you. You can also enjoy a Barley John's beer or other beverage during the class. There are limited spots due to seating, so check it out now.

See you around the galaxy!

Mary
