Captain’s Log – October 2018

Greetings, Crew!

I hope you can join us for this month's meeting. We'll do our annual overview of the past year, give awards and year pins, and celebrate another fun and fruitful year for the USS Nokomis! Remember that this is also the very last date to renew your dues for the upcoming year and continue to receive this lovely and informative newsletter!

We're moving in to the chilly season now. It seems pretty odd not to be doing Zoo Boo after so many years, doesn't it?

We have some fun events coming up with details in this newsletter. Watch the website for details of upcoming dates so you can get in on the fun BETWEEN NEWSLETTERS.

Have a great fall, and see you around the Galaxy!

Mary

November Bake Sale Fundraiser

Here's another reminder about the bake sale after our November meeting. Don't forget to bring your baked goods and your cash! You can go home with lots of yummy treats and our club will raise funds for fun events. Word on the street is that there will be some lemon bars and at least eight apple pies.

2018 Holiday Party Plan

Hi everybody,

We plan to have our annual holiday get-together on December 8th this year. We'll have two fun things on that day, including a dinner at Moe's in Mounds View and an outing to - wait for it - throw axes!! Yes, it's true - we're going to Bad Axe Throwing for some fun in the afternoon before the evening meal. You can come to one or both of these events. More information will be available by the October meeting, so watch for it and put December 8th on your calendar.

2018 Super Duper Movie Night Recap

We had a great time at this year's backyard movie night. The menu was delicious, with beef and chicken tacos (hard and soft shelled), all the fixings, beans and rice, multiple heavenly desserts, and freshly popped corn. The theme for the entertainment was Star Trek Games. We watched The Gamesters of Triskelion, Take Me Out to the Holosuite, The Game, Court Martial and A Piece of the Action. Can you name the game in each episode?

Thanks to those who came early to help me and Jack with the preparations, and to those who brought equipment and goodies! Over thirty members attended and had a blast. We love our Trek!

A Special Thank You…

Thanks to those who helped with Emma and Joey's big move. Thanks to Shannon, Rich, Pam and Jim, Roxanne and Barb, we were able to complete the truck loading and unloading in just eight hours, plus get the important furniture placed! Great job and thanks for being there on a Friday!

Captain’s Log September 2018

Hello, crew!

I hope you are all enjoying the festival season. Between the Fair, Renaissance Festival and many other Fall favorites, it's a very full time. We also have several fun things in store, including our September meeting and bowling party and the Super Duper Movie Night. Please join us at these fun activities!

We also have two other important happenings in September. First, everyone's dues are due to be paid by the end of the month. If you can't make the meeting, please make sure you get in touch with a board member to pay or use PayPal on the website. Second, we will be planning our 2018-2019 calendar. If you have a fun idea for an event, a fundraising idea, or some meaningful way for us to contribute to our community, please bring your thoughts to a board member ASAP. We'll be putting forward our proposal for the new calendar at the September meeting. Keep in mind that anything goes, as long as we have enough people who want to participate. It also helps if you are willing to do the leg-work to get us the information and help organize the crew.

Have a great Fall, and see you around the galaxy!

Mary

2018 Super Duper Movie Night

Please join us for our annual outdoor movie night on September 15th. The fun starts at 7pm in the backyard of the Captain's Quarters.

The cost of the event is still $12 and includes your meal and entertainment. Please bring a beverage of your choice and something to sit on (most people bring chairs but blankets work, too). Please sign up online ASAP or let Mary know if you plan to attend so we can plan the amount of food. We need to know who's coming by September 8th. It is critically important for everyone to RSVP.

The only other thing you need to know is that there is Star Trek on the menu. Please join us for the fun, rain or shine!

A message from Mark Uecker…

USS Nokomis Friends,

Gosh! What can I say? It’s been 31 or 32 years since we started the lake weekend tradition. My hair was a different color. My waistline was smaller. My car likely had crank windows without backup cameras, blind side indicators, GPS, or any other of those space age star trek type of gadgets. The internet did not exist. And, some of you weren’t even born. At least our TV had color even if the choices were mostly limited to the major networks.

Thank you all for years of memories, late night fires, excess carb weekends, plus supportive and set in stone friendships. We’ve gone from the old cabin weekends which included tent cities, the wrong side of the tracks, porta potties, fireworks and fireworks with a Viking ship sinking, fish fries, and even some skinny dipping. For Karen, the USS Nokomis has been a constant joy in her life. She looked forward to the lake weekend every year as it brought all the people she treasured into one venue for a long weekend of fun and possible debauchery.

You have always been good courteous guests. I am truly appreciative of the acceptance, understanding, and friendship that each of you offered this past weekend as Karen struggles with her frontal temporal lobe dementia. She really wanted one final weekend as she cares deeply for her Nokomis family and the bonds of friendship. I’m not a true star trek fan (I’m another type of geek); but, the bond between Nokomis members mirrors the bond I have with members of the National Lutheran Choir.

So, I thank each one of you for your friendship over the years. If that sounds like a cliché or even trite, please know that one of the most positive aspects of the Nokomis family which I have witnessed over the years is that you are always there for each other with support, time, transportation, weddings, funerals – whatever is needed. Just knowing that someone cares has a therapeutic effect and is appreciated by the person in need. It matters.

I will do my best to get Karen to Nokomis meetings and events as she is able and it’s logistically possible. In the meantime, I know she would enjoy a short email () from time to time. It’s the best way in which you can show support.

Until we see you again, live long and prosper.

Mark

Barley John’s Brewery Tour was FUN

A group of us enjoyed the beer and food and Barley John's on August 17th. It was fun to go through the brewery and see the process, taste the hops and get the story on how they make the beer. We also made it over to the 45th Parallel Distillery for a sampling of their cocktails. It was a fun time!
