Captain’s Log – December 2017

Howdy, crew!

We've had quite a year in 2017. We had lots of fun and did lots of good in our community. We also lost one of our most beloved members. Quite a mix of highs and lows, and I'm glad we did it together.

I hope to see all of you at the Holiday Party on the 9th. It will be fun to relax and spend time together. If I don't see you, have a happy and blessed holiday season! Don't forget to take care of club business during the break, as laid out in this newsletter.

See you around the galaxy!

Mary

16th Annual January Dance is January 13th

Hey everybody, are you ready for a fun evening? This year our dance will be at the Dan Patch American Legion in Savage once again. Why? Because we had so much fun there last time!

This is our most formal event of the year. It's an evening of dinner, dancing and socializing. Our favorite DJ, Rob from NewTown DJ, will be with us for the 17th time (pretty good, since we've had 16 of these!) and he rocks!

The theme this year is....wait for it....Star Trek! Wear a full costume or just a pair of Spock ears or a piece of jewelry or t-shirt - it's up to you. We don't have lots of chances to Trek ourselves out, so let's do it!

The cost of the evening is still $35, after all these years. Please plan to pay at least $20 of that amount by the evening of the Holiday Party (the 9th), so we can guarantee you a seat. This is a great opportunity to bring guests, friends and family, as it's open to anyone. No kids, though, please.

RSVP by signing up online using the signup sheet link, or email me at .

The Nokomis returns to A Klingon Christmas Carol 2017

The Dickens you say? QaPla!

As part of our holiday festivities this year, we will be returning to the Historic Mounds Theatre for A Klingon Christmas Carol on Saturday, December 16th, at 7:30 pm. This is a Klingon parody version of the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol presented in Klingon with English narration and subtitles. Many Nokomis members have attended this play in the past and recommend it highly.

Since the Mounds Theatre is a small venue and the play is expected to sell out, we need to move at warp speed to secure a block of seats together.

The cost of a ticket is $20 including theater fee and you can purchase your ticket using this link: Vendini Tickets

See you there!

ZooBoo’s Done! What’s next at the Como Zoo

Now that we've finished the thirtieth and final ZooBoo, you may be wondering "what's next?"

Sparky is getting a new $18.5 million home! When complete, it'll have a more natural Northwest Pacific coast landscape, a bigger pool with a transparent wall facing the audience and more shade for the public and animals. There will also be a separate, lower level underwater viewing area.

The footprint for the new project will take space where the amphitheater is, and what is currently Seal Island. Seal Island was originally built as Monkey Island, it was a WPA period project and in the late '70s was converted to house these animals. And it really doesn't have the infrastructure needed to house the seals.  Federal regulations for keeping the animals are also changing, requiring more room and salt water pools.

Sneak preview below, get a look at the vision for summer of 2019!

Cheers Pablo was a BLAST!

Members of the Nokomis channeled their inner Picasso and enjoyed 2 hours of painting at Cheers Pablo in Woodbury on November 4th.  Our instructor Hannah created a painting of the Enterprise just for us, and she guided us through the painting process step-by-step.  At the end of the night, there were 12 very different, creative paintings!  Everyone had a great time and some even expressed interest in another painting night in the future.

After our paintings had time to dry, we have a lovely meal at the Tavern Grill.

2017 Holiday Event

Save the date of December 9th for our annual holiday get-together. We are finalizing the details now and will know more by the November meeting.

The evening will include a get-together at a restaurant or hall. The cost will be either the food you bring to a potluck or the meal you purchase at a restaurant. There won't be any admission fee.

We hope everybody can come!

Captain’s Log – November 2017

Greetings,

Winter has arrived! Those 90-degree temperatures were so nice for so long that the snow seemed completely out of place, but I guess we've had lots of Halloweens with snow in our time. I hope you all have your longies out for the duration!

In my house, we are enjoying the new Star Trek series. The first couple of episodes were a little heavy on the Klingon subtitles for me, but they have calmed down over time. I'm happy to hear that the second season has been approved.

We won't be having a Scavenger Hunt after the November meeting. Unfortunately, there was not enough interest in the event. We will certainly go out to early dinner as a group, though. See you there!
