Captain’s Log, Supplemental: September 29th, 2021

Greetings, Crew!

Naturally, I have to start with the biggest news of the week. William Shatner seems to be headed to space! Blue Origin has not yet confirmed that he will be onboard their second human spaceflight, but rumors abound, and their website stated on Monday that the astronauts will be confirmed "in the coming days." Since the launch is slated for October 12th, that will be soon! Won't it be perfect to see our Captain going up? It seems like a fitting story arc to me!

I am putting one last plea out for recipes for our cookbook before I start final preparations. Please send them to me this week if you can. Any category is fine, and I particularly need some beverages and extras, like candy or sauces. Thanks in advance, and thanks to those that have sent a bunch my way!

See you around the Galaxy!

Book Review: Star Trek – A Celebration

So many books have been published, and so many stories shared, over the years. Are you looking for more? This one sounds pretty good and it caught my eye. Here's the reason - this paragraph in the review on trekmovie.com:

"Writing a book about Star Trek: The Original Series presents a challenge: How do you tell the story of a revered, classic show that can serve both die-hard fans who’ve heard the same stories told over and over for years along with the newcomers who came into Star Trek from either the Berman-era shows or the Kurtzman ones? Authors Ben Robinson and Ian Spelling have found a way, combining familiar stories with new interviews and rarely heard details without ever condescending to either group, in a beautiful new coffee table book called Star Trek: A Celebration, the second in a series that started with the Voyager book last year."

Sounds interesting, doesn't it? Check out the full review HERE. It goes in to some detail and is pretty intriguing.

Nominate a Crewmate!

Our annual awards ceremony will take place during the October General Membership Meeting on the 9th, and it's your chance to nominate your crewmates for their contributions. People do things in our volunteer-led organization all the time, so this is a fun way to give them a hand.

We don't have any categories, really. Any idea will be entertained. Here are some examples from past years to get you thinking:

  • Best Baker
  • Science Fair Award
  • Who Did The Least at CONvergence 2020? (this was for everyone, because we didn't have a room!)
  • Trivia God
  • Quatloo Queen
  • Fraction of Your Life Spent in the USS Nokomis

You get the idea - anything goes! I know you are all creative, so throw me an email with your ideas. Thanks, Mary

Captain’s Log, Supplemental: September 22, 2021

Greetings, Crew!

We had a great meeting this month, with lots of information shared. Our new calendar of events will be added to the website so you can see all of the plans. They include these upcoming additions:

  • Membership Meeting and Awards Ceremony on October 8th (virtual vs in-person still pending)
  • A walk at Wood Lake Nature Center in October (date pending)
  • Star Trek: Prodigy Series premier on October 28
  • Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 premier on November 18
  • A holiday event on December 11 (plans pending)

We also added lots of other fun plans, like Axe Throwing, a Brewery Tour, St Patrick's Day Beer Tasting Party, Feed My Starving Children food packing, virtual scavenger hunt, Como Zoo activity, and more! If you have other ideas, they are always welcome.

Well, that's it for today. I'm off to consider whether it's Mugato or Gumato!

See you around the Galaxy!

Chuckwagon Update 2021

We've made changes in our plans for the Chuckwagon social once again. There is a lot of uncertainty about the availability of the site and our ability to host the event, so we are postponing it until 2022. Although this is our largest fundraiser of the year, our lack of spending this year (due to limited events) means we don't have to worry about missing the chance!

One part of the event that will proceed as planned is the annual 50-50 raffle. This drawing benefits charity and also carries a great chance of winning for one lucky person. Half of the ticket sales goes to the winner, so the more tickets sold, the more you win. The tickets are $5 each or three for $10. You can purchase them through the website via PayPal or send a check to Pam. We will do the drawing on the originally planned date of October 17th. The odds of winning are really great, and so is our chosen charity - St Jude's Children's Research Hospital - so buy some!

Happy Star Trek Day!

I hope everyone will be able to join us at the General Membership Meeting this Saturday. We'll be virtual this month, via Zoom.

As always, September means two things for us (well, aside from Star Trek Day, but that goes without saying). First, remember that dues are due for everyone, regardless of join date. Please follow the instructions on the Join Us page. You can pay by PayPal, Venmo, or by mailing a check. There's a great article (coincidentally dated September 8, 2020) on the website if you need additional details.

Second, September brings a new calendar of upcoming events. Your Governing Board has put together a plan and will share it at Saturday's meeting. We'll go through it from October 2021 to December 2022 and give everyone an opportunity to ask questions and suggest additions, then officially vote in our plan. Remember that anyone can suggest an event and that we'll consider pretty much anything. It helps if you're willing to lead the event, of course, but it's not mandatory. We're looking forward to the discussion.

After this weekend's meeting we will share several important updates, so stay tuned for next week's newsletter if you can't make the meeting!

See you around the Galaxy!
