April Meeting will now be Online

Hennepin County Libraries announced more COVID-19 actions just after we completed our first online meeting on March 14.  The specific actions that affect us are

  • Library events will be canceled
  • Meeting and conference room reservations will be canceled
  • Fewer library computers available to increase distance between computer user

This means the April Meeting will be a ZOOM meeting, and very likely the May meeting.  We'll post the meeting code in the Event for each month, and send it in an article closer to the meeting.

Quick start to Nokomis ZOOM meetings

Meeting etiquette: During the meeting people can talk over each other and nobody gets through.  If you want to speak up, call out Mary’s name, she’ll pause the meeting and ask for comment. If you’re not talking in the meeting and have a way to do it, please mute your microphone.

If you have a headset with microphone it will be far easier to hear and be heard, but it’s not necessary.

And if you have to go to the, well, the personal needs room (wink wink), please don’t take the phone with you.

How to connect to any meeting we have.

Note: You don’t need to create a ZOOM account to join the meeting. For more information, go to Zoom.us and click Support.

Each meeting will have a unique meeting number.  You'll be able to see it in the Events page by clicking on the event to open the details.

March 14 General Membership Virtual Meeting Instructions

The COVID-19 advice from all quarters is to stay home, avoid crowd and exposure (see below), and above all don't spread the virus.  We've made the tough decision to reschedule a lot of our events, starting with the General Membership meeting March 14th.

We are trying out, for the first time ever, a Nokomis Virtual Meeting using the Zoom meeting service.  This article gives information on how to join in any of our Virtual Meetings, it's as simple as dialing a phone.  We're doing just voice, so far.

Attention, Crew, for an extremely important announcement

I’m writing to let you know of some Governing Board decisions related to upcoming events. We’ve been watching and waiting for emerging news of  COVID-19 disease. Due to very recent developments, we have reconsidered our earlier stance on moving ahead with our regular gatherings.

As you know, the situation has become a pandemic. This means that it is prevalent over the majority of the world (as of yesterday, that’s 114 countries). It also means that we need to take it very seriously. Most people aren’t getting very sick, but the only way to do our part is to follow the advice of the experts. Taking the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is a good way to do that, in our club and in our lives (full recommendations are listed below for your reference).

Accordingly, we have made some hard decisions about our calendar. Effective immediately, we ask that you check the website often to determine whether meetings and events will take place, since we may not know far in advance. Here’s what we’ve decided so far:

  • March 14th – the membership meeting will not take place in person. We are hoping to host the meeting virtually (by phone and maybe video). Check the website on Saturday morning for details. We really hope to get quorum by phone – how modern of us!
  • March 14th – the St Patrick’s Day party and beer tasting will be rescheduled to another date. Hold on to your beer because it will happen!
  • March 29th – it’s hard to say it, but the annual Chuckwagon Dinner and Fundraiser will be delayed until another date. Hang on to your tickets and raffle tickets – we’ll definitely be using them! More information on this will follow as soon as we have it.
  • Further events and meetings – we need to be flexible and make our decisions based on the ever-changing situation. Some experts say that we’ll be over the hump in a few months, and some say it’ll take longer. Additionally, some events are not confined to inside spaces and may go on, such as the June Picnic. Checking the website frequently will keep you in the loop.
  • When we do resume activities, we’ll count on each of you to be responsible. For example, don’t come to a meeting if you’ve just come back from a cruise - or are caring for a sick family member - until the experts say it’s OK.

During this unpredictable time, the Governing Board fully supports all measures to protect the health and welfare of USS Nokomis crew members. It’s hard to cancel events – especially since we plan so long and diligently for big ones like the Chuckwagon – but it’s the right thing to do for our club and our community. We will miss seeing you this weekend and for the near future, but we believe that following the recommendations of the experts is in our mutual best interest.

Take care of yourselves, and I know we’ll see each other around the galaxy (just not as soon as we expected).

Mary

Severe Weather Watch – A Presentation, Not an actual Watch

Jim Kline, our resident weather expert, offered to do a presentation about severe weather after Saturday March 14th's meeting. He has presented this material for Storm Chasers, Emergency Managers and such, showing the signs of storm clouds and tornado identification signs we can all see  There are some great information on Doppler Radar.
Please come to the meeting and get Weather Aware, and spread the word to anyone you know that would be interested!
Thanks Jim!!!

CoronaVirus – A Few Quick Answers

We all have questions about the Coronavirus and resulting COVID-19 infection, and how it affects our daily lives.   When wondering about how it affects the Nokomis, there are just a few guidelines to follow:

  • We intend to meet for all scheduled events, we're not preemptively cancelling anything.

We understand if you can't make it or don't want to travel, just let us know if you've committed to do something and have to back away.

  • We WILL cancel an event if the venue we've booked cancels.

The locations are always listed in the event calendar, and we do try to keep the links to those venues current.

  • If YOU are sick, please keep your friends healthy and stay home.

If you have Headache, Sore Throat, Cough, Runny Nose, or Difficulty Breathing you may be sick, please stay home.  If you've had a fever within 24 hours, you are generally still contagious - please keep your friends healthy and stay home.

Twin Cities Regional Science Fairs 2020

Twin Cities Regional Science Fairs

will be held at the Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds, on

February 28-29, 2020

We've helped out every year since 1994, please help us help the Kids Create the Future.  Let's spend our Bonus Leap Day helping the kids!

Setup starts at 9AM on the 28th. We don't need to haul all the heavy tables and chairs, our particular set of skills is the detailed work with signs, power, and logistics.  Lunch is provided.

If you've got a science background and know about scientific method, please volunteer to judge projects.  Each student is judged at least 3 times, so you can imagine the number of judges we need.  You don't need to be an expert in the areas you're judging, just need to judge the quality and completeness of their work.  The kids start checking in at about 1PM, with judging starting at about 3:00pm.  With luck and work we'll be done by 10:00PM.

On Saturday the award ceremony starts at 10:00AM and goes until about noon, followed by takedown and a little lunch at Khan's.

Please join us, and come to the February Meeting to find out more!

See you at the 35th Anniversary Party!
